PROGRAMS

The Critical Island Studies Consortium fosters innovative thinking through its alternative curriculum development, reading groups, and colloquiums, exploring the breadth and depth of archipelagic thought. The CIS is keen to learn from novel ideas and address academic challenges that push boundaries and expand horizons. Participation in these thought-provoking programs is welcome and suggestions for new intellectual initiatives are encouraged.

Curriculum

To vitalize Critical Island Studies, this experimental curriculum project proposes centering the archipelago and ocean, countering Western-centric and continent-focused education. Grounded in rich field experience and robust theoretical training, the CIS curriculum envisions an island-based approach that fosters educational implications transcending conventional theoretical biases.

Reading Groups

The CIS Reading Groups aim to explore alternative critical theories that foster archipelagic thought. By reading and discussing seminal texts and recent publications on relevant topics, these groups will serve as a foundation for developing future activities centered around an island-centric, decolonized perspective that challenges continental prejudice prevalent in Western theory.

Colloquiums and Lectures

The CIS Colloquiums and Lectures assemble a diverse array of scholars to advance Critical Island Studies through shared discourse. Fostering collaboration between consortium members and external academics, these forums facilitate the presentation and discussion of works-in-progress, be they papers or books. By providing a platform for interdisciplinary exchange, the colloquiums and lectures propel the field.
